Archives For SAT

We had a fun “Box” Day!!

Well, this year I have been very quiet about my curriculum choices. Really, I have been trying to slow down and focus more on our homeschooling. Here is a list of what we are doing at this point:

2nd Grade Curriculum, Emma

  • Sonlight: Core B+C (World History from Creation to the Present)
  • Sonlight: Grade 3 Readers and Language Arts
  • English: All About Spelling, level 2, First Language Lessons
  • Bible: Sonlight curriculum and Little Keepers of the Home
  • Math: Life of Fred, Butterflies
  • Science: Real Science for Kids Pre-level 1, some Apologia
  • Additional History Resources: Mystery of History 2, Veritas Press Cards
  • Physical Education: Ballet
  • Choir

Overall, the biggest change for me this year is using Sonlight. Last year, I felt that all of Emma’s courses just did not mesh together very well and my husband and I decided to look at Sonlight again. This led to me getting the core B+C, which is a one year condensed study of World History. So far, I love the Sonlight. Having everything in one spot and for her exact age is very relaxing to me.

I also ordered the language arts package from Sonlight and I like the readers. I do not like that they cover a whole different time period than the time we are working on with everything else, though. Also, I like the way Margaret Wise introduces grammar with the First Language Lessons very much. So, for now, I am continuing to use the First Language Lessons workbook for our grammar, and using the Sonlight writing program portion of the language arts, and sticking with All About Spelling for spelling because I like that as well. So, the language arts portion is all a bit random, but seems to be working for her.

12th Grade Curriculum, Nick

  • History: US Government
  • English: Wordsmith Craftsman
  • Math: Geometry/Algebra, Life of Fred
  • Science: Apologia, Exploring Creation with Chemistry
  • Elective: College Prep Genius, Prep/Take SAT and ACT. DriversEd.com course
  • Foreign Language: Italian
  • Computer Science
  • Physical Education

For Nick, we are kind of down to the wire! He will be taking the SAT soon and he is working on preparing for that. He is doing a lot of Math and writing practice. He is at a point where he could either go onto college or take another year to get ready and take some local classes. We are thinking his SAT scores will help us make the final decision. Should be interesting.

If you want to help your kids study for the SAT or ACT, or maybe you just want to improve your vocabulary, some of these new book and digital products might be perfect for you. I received a book from VocabAhead with over 300 pages of common SAT and ACT vocab words–the book uses the form of cartoons to tell a story, explaining and reinforcing the definition for each word. I think everyone would agree that kids like this type of learning approach. This way they have an amusing visual that helps them more easily remember a new word.

Now, while using cartoons may not be brand new, the people over at VocabAhead are definitely thinking ahead…they have also made these cartoons available as videos and MP3s. You can listen to the cartoons narrated through your mp3 player–or even get iPod, iPhone and iPad apps which play the cartoons.

My book version of VocabAhead includes a code I can use to go to the website and download mp3 videos of the words in my book. The book also includes a review quiz after each set of ten words, so Nick is just adding a tiny bit of vocab into each day, and doing a review quiz weekly. I think this is a no fail way to add a bit of vocab. One thing I didn’t like is that the written book does not show the pronunciation for each word–but, the videos do sound each one out.

You can see a bit of VocabAhead here:

As far as watching the videos, I’m not so into watching my own mp3s–I like using the App, and I like playing around on the VocabAhead website. Check out the SAT visual flash cards in their study room, watch videos or signup for an email word of the day.

You can purchase the VocabAhead book with the 300 Most Common SAT words for $12.95, here.

If you are hoping to improve your kids vocabulary…or looking to add some fun into your homeschool, I totally recommend the book I am reviewing today! This aid for Vocabulary understanding and retention is hysterical. I have several kids who are thumbing through it whenever they are bored or trying to ignore other work they have to do.

The basis of the book is using the power of mnemonics to learn hundreds of SAT Words. Take a look at the graphic below for a simple explanation:

how-it-works

* In independent school tests, students with Vocabulary Cartoons learned 72% more words than students with traditional rote memory study materials and had 90% retention.

This particular book is $12.95 and is for the 7th to 12th grade level, and has 290 SAT words and includes 29 review quizzes.

We have been using this for a quick vocabulary quiz each week. If you have younger children, you can also find elementary options. I think this is a real winner. Reasonably priced, funny and easy to implement. Go to Vocabulary Cartoons to find out more.
