Veggie Tales

The Little House that Stood

Join Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and some new piggy friends in a parable of ‘The Wise and Foolish Builders’ from Matthew 7 in the new Veggie Tales, The Little House That Stood.

My daughter enjoyed this one, and when I asked her what she learned, she immediately replied that she learned “to follow God’s Word and build on a firm foundation.” So I guess she got the point of the story!

I managed to sit through it as well {grin}. It was cute. I am always watching with a critical eye, I admit. I liked two of the pigs and was annoyed by one. It is always good when the stories actually teach your children decent values. Overall, I liked the plot and basic theme of making good choices, by following the “Master Builder’s Handbook.”

The second video seemed to be placed because of Easter, with a Humpty Dumpty story. I didn’t enjoy that one as much as the first, mainly because I agreed the mayor needed a break!  Yet, it also kept my daughter’s attention and she seemed pleased by the happy ending.

Take a look at their website. They have tons of resources for parents, a discussion guide, coloring pages, and more.

You can also watch for fun stuff for your kids at Veggie Tales on facebook, or follow them on twitter.

AND, I get to give one The Little House That Stood DVD away!

Just leave me a comment telling me who you want to win the DVD for ~ OR who your favorite Veggie Tales character is! I will choose a winner on March 15, 2013.

Little Angels Prayers for Everyday by Roma Downey

Little Angels Prayers for Everyday by Roma Downey

Remember your own bedside prayers? This book, Little Angels Prayers for Every Day, by Roma Downey with Illustrator Lisa Reed, brings back memories of some of my favorites.

This is so sweet for children ages about 2-6, in my opinion. Through this series, which teaches about God’s love, children can derive comfort and have their own special book!

Little Angels Prayers for Every Day offers children their own handbook of prayers. With likeable characters, such as the twins Alex and Zoe and their guardian angels and plenty of rhymes this book will be a nice gift for little hands. I like that the book is a padded board book, with 32 pages and a smaller size for young children. (6.25 x 7.25)

There are over 50 simple prayers for children to identify with and enjoy. The rhyming prayers start with morning prayers and continue throughout the day.

The book includes prayers for specific times, such as prayers to ask the Lord for help or guidance. Relevant Bible verses are included on many pages. I really think this is a good book for little ones to pore over.

We will be sending ours to a special little cousin!

See more on the website, on their Facebook page, on the author’s twitter or even on youtube.

Children and Love Languages

Heather —  March 27, 2012

Have you heard of love languages?

This basic idea is that people give and receive love and affection in various ways.  Sometimes, if the love language being used by one person is not understood or appreciated by the other, there is a lack of communication. The original Five Love Languages book helped couples learn to love each other even better.

Two new resources, The 5 Love Languages for Children and A Perfect Pet for Peyton, have just been released. One helps parents understand the love languages of their children and the second allows children to explore these concepts about love languages.

I got a copy of both of these books to review. I am reading through the adult one and meanwhile, my daughter and I have been having fun with the children’s book.

I actually find it easier to understand and remember the love languages using a kid’s book! The book’s concept is unique for kids and features a birthday adventure, almost a quest where kids learn about the five love languages.

Young readers can even take a quiz at the end to help determine their own love language. I like the colorful, fun illustrations and I appreciate that the book is a nice length at 64 pages and has a sturdy hardcover. This is a book children will want to read and reread again and again.

Have you seen these new Phix Energy drink sticks?

I was super curious to try some of these natural energy drink mix sticks. I am perfectly happy with my big glass of water to drink…but I do also count on my morning coffee and afternoon tea. And, if something important is going down, I need more coffee!

I do use organic milk in the coffee, ok? Ha! Well, I know many people use things like coffee and diet drinks and such for pick me ups during the day. My own teens are asking for things like this as they get older and need more stamina for tests, and sports, for example.

Anyway, so the kids have brought home all kinds of energy type drinks. I often fuss at them about all the unpronounceable ingredients on the labels and beg them to find healthier choices.

When I saw Phix Energy, I wanted to try them. I want natural and organic ingredients. I know the kids want flavors. Phix drinks make us both happy. They offer cool flavors like CitronTropic, and Teaberry. And, the little single serving sticks can be used on the go. They even have vitamins and minerals.

Phix says, “Our powders are entirely natural, vegan, and gluten free. All our solutions are good for you and of course they’re completely safe. Just mix with water and drink to your health!”

So, when I got a trial, I immediately tried the organic, gluten free Teaberry.  I liked that one. When dissolved in a glass of water, it had a berry taste. It did have a teeny aftertaste to me. When I tried the Tropic the next day, I read the directions better and decided to use more water. For me, Using about 14 oz of water and letting the Tropic sit a minute worked. It was delicious. I like to use my blender bottle, but you do not have to.

My daughter liked the Tropic, too. In fact, my teenagers all liked them, so I put them into their stockings at Christmas! All in all, they are fun and colorful. I see now, you can even use the Phix as a hot drink in winter. I’ll have to try that.

While I did not give up my beloved coffee for Phix, I liked having an afternoon pick me up with these. I did not have a crash later. Honestly, I am most excited about the kids having a choice that is more natural if they want.

“Phix does not just rely on caffeine to boost and maintain energy, it was designed by leading naturopathic physicians and licensed dietitians to utilize the body’s natural healing power,” said Brown, “So we can guarantee you’re Drinking In Health.”

Phix also has a calming drink, called Phix Sleep. I tried that Lemon Camomile. I did not like the camomile flavor. It was okay, but I don’t like camomile. I gave it to my husband to taste and he loved it and drank it all. Basically, if you like herbal tea flavors, you’d probably like this one. The 1/2 cup I drank made me sleepy!

Phix is coming out with more flavors, (like sugar-free grape) so keep an eye out for these! You can also get more information on them, like what exactly is in them, and how to order some on their website:

Do you have a hard time just finding time to stay active? Do you decide not to exercise or change to a healthier diet because these changes seem overwhelming?

The Moderation Nation Web site can help with this. Moderation Nation is a national wellness campaign created by the Hershey Center for Health & Nutrition® (HCHN), in collaboration with the American Dietetic Association and the American Council on Exercise, to help people access practical tips, tools and resources for achieving balance in nutrition and physical activity while enjoying chocolate in moderation.

I got a kick out of some of their ideas:

  • Activity Snacks. When it comes to getting active, sometimes you need to think of activity as a “snack,” not an hour-long workout or elaborate routine, but something simple and fun to fit into your busy lifestyle. Moderation Nation has created several “Activity Snacks” to get you moving throughout the day – in the kitchen, while watching TV, playing with kids indoors and outdoors, or at your desk.
  • Batuka Videos. A fitness activity fit for the whole family. The video will help you learn the Batuka dance in the comfort of your living room, while having fun and getting in some of your daily recommended physical activity.
  • Activity Snack App. A free app that can help you track your exercise “snacks”

Visit to The Moderation Nation Web site to see more about Nation™ Activity Snacks™ and Batuka Dance.
