Dads Desk:

It was finally time to take my gaming experience to the next level with EA Sports NCAA Football 13.  Before I headed out to my local Walmart, I made sure it was available.  A quick check of Walmart.com on my iPad assured me a copy was waiting for me.  I grabbed my teenage daughter and headed out.

The most noticeable difference is the quality of the HD graphics.  Next is the addition of the  Dynasty mode.  As I mentioned before, you have the opportunity to add one of several former Heisman Trophy winners to your team and help them regain that prestigious title.  Take the time to go through all the menus and familiarize yourself with all that NCAA Football 13 has to offer.

As I mentioned in my last post, I faced a last second defeat at the hands of my seven year old daughter.  With EA Sport’s You’re Covered Program, in four simple steps I was able to add her face to the cover of our game. Just go to the link and follow the steps.

She got a kick out of hers:

and when we shared it on Facebook, she got plenty of Likes.  It was fun to personalize the cover for her and now her victory is a great family story with “proof”.

As I mentioned before, here is a quick rundown of the main differences between EA Sports  NCAA Football 12 and NCAAFootball 13.

  1. You can become one of 10 legendary Heisman Trophy winners (Robert Griffin III, Doug Flutie, or Herschel Walker–just to name a few).  I choose Herschel Walker in honor of my wife having attended UGA.  Use their strengths and talents on your favorite team to help them in their quest to regain the Heisman Trophy.
  2. The Passing game has been improved-both from a Quarterback and Wide Receiver standpoint.    As the QB you will have more control on the ball’s trajectory and on how you use play action and the option.  As a WR you will have a greater ability to read and react to the defense; so you can make that catch.
  3. Reaction time will depend on who you are.  Football players have differing abilities and now that is factored into the game.  The game slows down during key times increasing your on-field awareness and opening up more opportunities as you sense things before they happen.
  4. Impact your ability to recruit the talent your team needs with Dynamic Dynasty.  Your recruiting grade can change from week to week.  And your Game day Saturdays will come to life with live studio updates and commentary by Rece Davis.

So, the stage is set in our home for a rematch.  Will this one end differently?  Will I be able to overcome the football prowess of my second grader?  No matter the outcome, the HD graphics, new player features, and Dynamic Dynasty option—to name a few—guarantee a good time will be had on the Grid Iron.

Dad’s Desk:

During Family Game Night, it’s pretty common around our household to stir up and renew our video game rivalries.  After we have had our share of nachos, veggies with dip, and root beer floats, we turn our attention to the game at hand.  We especially enjoy EA Sport’s NCAA Football 12.

NCAA Footbal 12 for Xbox 360

Over the years we have moved around the country; so as we pick our teams, we often choose a team from where we have lived.  The stadium graphics are incredible and bring back fond memories of when we saw our teams compete in person.

Play Selection

We have six kids of all different ages.  Recently, during our Family Game Night, we have started having our youngest take part in learning to play.

Friendly RivalryIn our latest showdown, she threw a Hail Mary pass for a touchdown to win with no time left on the clock (sounds like the ending to a famous Boston College game from days gone by).  I was “schooled” by my 7 year old :).  After wallowing in my defeat, I was heartened by the fact that there will be another Family Game Night where I will have the opportunity to regain my former glory.

EA Sports in conjunction with Walmart is getting ready to launch the latest title in the franchise- NCAA Football 13.  It will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  The release date is set for July 10, 2012.  This latest version of an already extremely popular video game will take your gaming experience to the next level.

Game On!

There are several new features that EA Sports has added that will get you hooked.  Here’s a quick rundown:

  1. You can become one of 10 legendary Heisman Trophy winners (Robert Griffin III, Doug Flutie, or Herschel Walker–just to name a few).

Another great feature of this game is going to be their You’re Covered Program.  You will have the opportunity to add your picture (or anyone you know who loves college football as much as you) to the cover of the game.  This is video game cover personalization like you have never seen before.  In four steps you can customize your cover.

Create Your Own NCAA Football 13 Cover for Xbox 360

This all comes in time for the 2012 – 2013 NCAA College Football season, which is about to get under way.  In my next post, I am going to share with you my review of NCAA Football 13 and offer one lucky reader a chance to win their own copy of this newest release by EA Sports.  In the meantime, take a look at the You’re Covered Program and if you don’t win, get ready for a great deal on your copy of NCAA Football 13 at your local Walmart.

Say Anything Game Review

Heather —  October 27, 2011

Want a new family game that gets people laughing and is hard to cheat or be aggressive about? Do you just want to see people have fun without strategizing for ages?

Then get Say Anything Family this Holiday Season.

Seriously. This family and party game is hilarious and easy to play. In a spin on giving your opinion, in this game, you must talk, write and vote on opinions and guess how others will vote.

The game is good for multi-age play and for lots of players. We played a few times with just three players, but, the more the better. If you have more than six, you can make teams.

Pieces are all included and pack back up nicely. Kids seem to love the little dry erase boards and pens. I liked the bright colors and modern look to all the pieces. The cards cracked me up!

Say Anything Family Edition game retails for $19.99.

I received Say Anything Family Edition through the TOS Crew for review purposes. I have given my honest opinion.

Lately, I have been challenged by lots of game reviews! Honestly, while I think my subconscious ability to strategize is pretty good, in game play…well, I often stink.

I really am not a player. That is why I married my husband (he’s the fun one) and also why I enjoy being with my children, they do help me play. (I would be fine, just poring over historical documents, I do find that fun.)

Anyway, as a “NOT” puzzle lover, I had to make myself check this one out. (I knew some of my kids would like it). I didn’t expect to. What I noticed about this 3D word puzzle mix of rubik’s cube and like, scrabble, is that I love to play it by myself. Just mess around with making a word or two. It is cute.

The kids like it and I haven’t even had our resident puzzler lover –my son who at age three would do puzzles upside down on a glass table, then climb under to see his finished product!--try it as he is out of the country. I think if you know someone who likes puzzles and word games, this is a fantastic little item.

And, if you want to leave it around on the coffee table, etc, people will pick it up and get a bit of logic practice! You can even get sneaky and use it for official learning–they give lesson plans on their website: http://www.scrublecube.com/education.html

Now, you are supposed to play it as a real game and the cube comes with, score sheets, and sand timer, etc. So, once you feel adept, go for earning points with your words and play to win.

Appropriate for about 8+, this retails at $24.95, and you can find it at Barnes & Noble and Toy’s R’Us. Note: I also saw it cheaper a few places online.

Here is Em’s take on it:

Intriguing Game and a Fun Giveaway!

Creative and so colorful!

Creative and so colorful!

When I originally signed up to review Time Island, I figured it was maybe a game where kids learned about telling time…maybe some Math? My little one could use that, I thought.

Man, was I wrong! Turns out, Time Island turns is very educational. But the name is actually suggestive of the theme of the game. Survival!

time island treetops

I was a bit busy when our review kit came, and I asked my older daughter to go ahead and set up the game and “help” her baby sister try to play…and let me know how it went. To set up an account, a parent must give some permissions and do the setup. My older daughter got around this by pretending to be an adult, thinking she was helping me by not bothering me…Yes, I teach them to think out of the box….{sigh}. This is in the beta stage and I had free review access though, so I think that may be harder to do in the future.

Anyway, Before long, I heard giggling and laughing…a bit of frustration as the screen took longer than they wanted to load…and then a request to start up the other computer so they could “visit” and text with with one another in this cool new virtual world. Isn’t 2011 wild?

IMG_0915

I started up the other computer…and looked over shoulders. Very soon I wanted to play! While I enjoy lots of websites, I am pretty critical. With Time Island, the artistic side of me was awed. The screens were filled with intricate, engaging visuals. Gorgeous make believe settings, tons of items kids can earn, learn about and play with.

Even the sounds for the game are marvelous! I loved the gentle bird calls and other nature and island noises!

Very soon it became obvious that my older daughter enjoyed this just as much as my younger, maybe even more. She “got it” and was good at navigating the screens and games. I think the game was a little hard for my six year old, but she was content to poke around and copy her sister.

I did notice that they also have a newsletter kids can click on to get tips for the game~this is great for my six year old!

The Official Word:

Time Island is a safe virtual game world for kids. The creators of Time Island seek to promote values such as friendship, loyalty, curiosity, independence and care for the environment. It is a place of wonder and adventure. Your child’s survival skills will be put to the test as they explore white beaches and lush jungles; tree-top terraces and misty underground caverns.

From what I can tell so far, I did not find anything offensive. Many virtual world and kids sites also link to other sites…or ads for more adult sites. This one does not. I liked the overall feel of the game, bright and positive. The individual mini-games were intelligent and kids do learn a lot of interesting bits of information about survival.

time island beach

So, that’s my honest opinion:) My kids liked getting a Time Island Fun pack with a bandana, stickers, temporary tattoos and bracelets all in a little Time Island sack. Yes, Em was covered with tattoos. She gets that from her father!

And, I get to give away another Time Island Fun Pack! To enter, visit Time Island online and check them out! Leave me a comment letting me know what you think of Time Island!

(You can also check out Time Island on Facebook)

I will choose a winner on Sat., August 13, 2011. For an additional entry, follow me through RSS or GFC.

Thanks to MomSelect and Time Island for giving me a trial to Time Island and a Fun Pack and one to giveaway.

Wits & Wagers Family

Heather —  December 19, 2010

wits n wagers family

Looking for a fun party game to play with your kids? I just got the chance to try out a game called Wits & Wagers Family Edition, from North Star Games. My husband and I got the biggest kick out of this game. It is actually a trivia game, similar to the popular Wits & Wagers, but from what I gather, made a bit easier for families. You can play with individual players, or groups with kids 8 and up (although we let Emma on a teamJ

The game surprised me, in that I expected the game to be more verbal—while it IS a trivia game, each answer is given using a number! This threw me a bit, but my boys loved this. You can work in teams and even win without knowing the exact answer…because you can also score points by placing your piece (Meeples) on a teammates guess. Whoever comes closest to the correct number, without going over, wins the points.

I liked the game parts and pieces- everything is simple, not lots of stuff to piece together or lose, but well made scoreboards that you use w/dry erase markers and lots of question cards. The little wooden Meeples, are people shaped playing pieces—my kids loved those.

This is a fun addition for game lovers for the Holidays. You can find Wits & Wagers Family at  Toys R’Us and I just saw this at Target…I also saw Wits & Wagers Family on sale right now on Amazon (sign up for Amazon Mom and get in time for Christmas with free shipping!)
