Summer Siesta…Resting and Reading

Learning for her, Mom time for me!

Learning for her, Mom time for me!

I am enjoying the busy, warm, fun days of Summer right now, and I honestly do not want to talk about school much at all! However, I do think lying by the pool, going on nature walks and letting my children plan menus on these lazy Summer days are all forms of education also, so…I do believe it is true that teaching is always going on one way or another for all parents!

I hope you are enjoying times of rest and peace with your children. I have to admit, our days have been either absolutely lovely or I am pulling my hair out, wondering what just happened to our peace. Anyway, last Summer, I began the season with more rules. This time around, I was a bit more relaxed.

After two weeks into it, I am going back to one rule–the We Are Having A Siesta rule. I posted about this last year (read here: have a summer siesta for your kids!) and it really worked well for us to have an hour of quiet and rest after lunch, with reading, but always in the same spot and no getting up and running around and NO electronics.

I am not sure how I forgot to do this again until now, but now we are doing it again:) What are some of your favorite ways to support yourself and your kids during the Summer?

  1. What a great idea! I should try this at our house. I love reading your blog!

  2. We love reading all the time. Summer is the perfect time because it is usually too hot to go out and play.

  3. My lunch is almost over so I am going to have to come back and read your siesta.
I really want to keep up the with school over the summer so my son is ready in the fall. I have also started some fun things with my 2 year old to focus on teaching him. I am picking on color, shape, number and letter per week and trying to teach them any where I can. Last night he was taking a bath and I had two yellow cups, yellow balloon, a yellow hat and yellow soap so we were doing nothing but talking about yellow. It was fun!!!

Hi, Nina! good to hear from you:) You are such a sweet mom! I can totally imagine the fun bathtime:) I wanted to tell you that one of my favorite blogs has a section where she has done letter work for her kids–if you go to http://delightfullearning.blogspot.com/ and look under “alphabet fun” in her tabs, you can find some good stuff for little guys!

  4. Your blog is very lovely. I like your siesta idea. We do something similar here. I have three boys ages 10, 8, and 4 and a 3 yr old daughter. After lunch I allow the 3 and 4 yr olds to watch tv while the 10 yr old reads and I do a reading program for my 8 yr old (he is dyslexic and we’re working to get him reading at grade level). The reason I allow the two younger kids to watch tv is because they don’t watch much thru out the day and I really need them quiet in order to teach my 8 yr old.
I’m on the TOS crew and something you said in a post caught my attention. You said if you’re on the computer too long your kids get sad…mine get grumpy and it makes me sad. I know I’m failing my husband and my Father when I spend too much time on the computer…that was one of the reasons I posted that… I just wanted to see if I was the only one who struggled with too much computer…I guess it’s obvious, I’m not.

hi, Marie:) Thank you! I am glad you’ve found a schedule where you can focus even with little ones:)
And, yes, I think there is a fine line we have to find when we blog–there are so many good things to do with the computer! Over the past year, I have begun to get a feel for when I really can get on and get stuff done versus taking time away from my family. And, sometimes I get a bit sad that my blog isn’t all I envisioned…but, with Summer activities and the new crew year coming up, I have brought this before God and asked him to help me just enjoy doing my blog. For fun, like when I first started:)

  6. I LOVE quiet time. It has been a lifesaver for me many times, but now that the children are older and (somewhat) calmer, I’m the only one who slips away for a siesta.

We use Miquon Math for the littles, Key to curriculum and Singapore math for the mediums, and Singapore New Elementary Math with ALEKS for the bigs. With Crew products, of course. 🙂

  7. This is a great idea for the summer. I try to keep my children inside during the hottest hours of the day. We are in New Mexico so it is very dry and hot during the summer. I need to crack down on how they use their quit time.
