OrganicIndiaTea

Over the past few years, I have learned so much about eating healthy, local and organic and we feel so much better! I am always on the lookout for USDA organic products that I can trust to nourish myself and my family. Recently, as a member of Moms Meet  (greenmomsmeet.com), I received samples to try out from ORGANIC INDIA.

As a tea lover, I was very excited to see the USDA logo on some delicious sounding teas! ORGANIC INDIA makes their trademark product, Tulsi (Holy Basil) tea in over 20 flavors, and I tried out:

Tulsi (Holy Basil) Original
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Green
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Moringa
Tulsi (Holy Basil) Cinnamon Rose
I later bought the Tulsi (Holy Basil) Lemon Ginger

My favorite may be the original Tulsi. I started with that one and just love it. The flavor is light and delicate, but seems to have a more robust flavor to me than a green tea, for example. I did not feel I needed to add lemon or honey to enjoy it, and it was not too strong or dense a tea flavor either. I was happy that I did not have to talk my family into trying our Organic India items. On the contrary, I had to share more than I wanted to! MY husband loved the Tulsi (Holy Basil) Moringa, and pretty much used the whole box. My one daughter enjoyed the Tulsi (Holy Basil) Cinnamon Rose, and I was thrilled when she would choose that over something like hot chocolate. Seriously.

When I ran out of all my teas, I got the Tulsi (Holy Basil) Lemon Ginger, and I like that as well. It has a definite ginger bit of spiciness to it. My least favorite would be the Tulsi (Holy Basil) Green, that just did not taste enough for me. The teas are organic, caffeine free and just as much a herbal supplement as a cup of tea. The Holy Basil is noted for its stress relieving properties. Organic India website mentions that “modern research has classified Tulsi as an adaptogenic herb. Adaptogens have been shown to support the body’s natural immune system while relieving the body’s negative reaction to stress.

Support for the immune system
Increased stamina and endurance
Relief and protection from everyday stress
Abundant antioxidants”

video on tulsi:

Other tea flavors add additional properties, but after drinking the Tulsi teas for over a month, I agree they are stress relieving and I really look forward to my cup of tea.

I also realized that Organic India offers all kinds of organically grown herbal supplements. I began to try out several supplements that came in capsule form as well as a neat product, Moringa Leaf Powder.

As we enjoy smoothies very often, the Moringa Leaf Powder was easy to incorporate into our diet. I simply added a 1/2 teaspoon whenever I made a smoothie. I also would sprinkle it into stews and soups, occassionally pasta sauce. I think it gave my family some benefit. Research supports that it definitely can. I can say that my kids stayed healthy during a nasty round of colds and flu going around!

smoothie with moringa

Here are some details on Moringa:

  • Moringa is considered one of the most complete, nutrient-dense plants on Earth, containing over 90 nutrients, 46 antioxidants, and abundant minerals.
  • Moringa leaves have been eaten for thousands of years as a superfood nutritional supplement, and are often used to combat malnutrition in impoverished countries.
  • Daily use of Moringa as a dietary supplement can help restore nutritional imbalances.
  • This concentrated superfood is both alkalizing and energizing, and is abundant in vitamins, minerals and complex amino acids.
  • ORGANIC INDIA Moringa is USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Kosher and Halal certified, gluten-free, and vegan.
  • One 8 oz. canister of Moringa Leaf Powder retails for $22.99, and 90 capsules of Moringa retails for $19.99.

How will you enjoy your daily dose of Moringa? You can sprinkle it in soups, smoothies, and over salads, or combine it with almost anything to create a power-packed punch of nutrition. Moringa can be mixed in with mac-and-cheese or other children’s foods to add a serving of the green superfood to kids’ diets as well.

The herbal supplements I tried include:

Moringa (in capsule form) -help to restore your imbalances, add concentrated superfood nutrition to your diet and help you to consume the recommended 6-10 servings of vegetables per day.

Joy! -uplifts mood, boosts energy and vitality, and reduces emotional tension and stress

Turmeric Formula -supports important blood and liver functions, healthy joints and overall well-being, which is ultimately reflected in a radiant, supple skin.

My husband has been using the Moringa and says he feels better when he takes it. I take the Joy! and Turmeric and I feel that they have helped keep me reasonably healthy during a hard winter. I love knowing that the supplements are USDA certified, that makes me more confident in their ability to work.

Video on supplements:

ORGANIC INDIA describes its mission as “To provide true wellness for all by offering 100% organic, pure, and natural products.” ORGANIC INDIA also strives to create a sustainable global environment by working with thousands of family farmers in India on tens of thousands of acres of certified organic farmland. The company actively promotes sustainable agriculture and pays these farmers premium prices for their crops.

So far, I am very impressed with these products. The teas and supplements we tried are tasty and I feel they are of good quality. I like that the Organic India USA website offers ALL kinds of detailed information on their products, even videos explaining the health benefits of the various supplements. Try out their Organic India Herb Finder! #momsmeet

As well as online, I can find the teas in many of my local stores including Vitamin Shoppe and my local Food Co-op.

I really recommend these products. Check them out for yourself, and Save 20% on Organic India products by using the code kiwi20. This code is for one-time use only.

I’ve recently discovered Thrive Market, and am happy to see such a place popping up online! It has a product lineup best compared to Whole Foods, with prices and a membership setup similar to Costco (price 25-50% off retail). They also aim to make “healthy living easy and affordable for everyone”, and for every membership purchased, one is given to a low-income family.

And for the readers here – they are generously giving one year membership for free, a $59.95 value! Enter for the chance to have access all year to 25-50% off your favorite organic and natural market items.

I love shopping at my local health food store, but love online shopping even more…so I felt right at home here. I did a little research for you via an order thanks to the kind folks at Thrive and I am really excited to report how wonderful my experience was!FullSizeRender (2)

First of all, the website is gorgeous. I love clean, simple lines and this site balances a full inventory with a surprisingly clean, minimal interface. Easy to navigate and shop – which makes the process faster and much easier than in-store shopping.

The product lineup is pretty extensive. I found all of my favorite teas, baking ingredients/dry goods, snack bars and supplements. There are a few things I may still have to go to my local health food store, like refrigerated probiotics.

Oh – and an important feature – once you have an account, your shopping cart syncs across devices! I love this since I often pause and pick back up later on my iPad.

They have my favorite tea for almost 1/2 price! I actually have paid even more than the retail price they list for it – bad!

A few of my favorites…organic_Moroccan_Mint_tea_-_Thrive_Market

A Clean Slate! Your Health

So, how are the resolutions going?

Whether you like to enter the new year with a list of resolutions for yourself or not – you can’t deny that a shiny new year is associated with a clean, fresh start!

I personally do not like resolutions. Only a mere 8% of people have success*, and the rest may feel badly about the “failure” and end up worse than before! A big new years resolution (they can be small but let’s face it, they are usually big ones) doesn’t exactly jive with the “baby steps” path to health that I subscribe to. For example, the top resolution is to lose weight. But that doesn’t associate well with the reason WHY you want to do that, or how. It’s a giant, looming, disconnected ambition without a plan. Instead, choose a baby step that focuses on happiness, or a small goal that is a part of reaching your weight goal. In time, the weight loss will feel like a coincidental by-product.

With that in mind, do take advantage of the clean slate and think about what baby steps you can take this month to start the year off right! Maybe this will be the year of lasting habits, not resolutions.

Keep an eye on your email – this month we have several giveaways coming up to help you on your way!

100 Days of Real Food Cookbook

By Caitlin Grace Webb, Lifestyle Contributor

I have been on a real food, whole food journey for a while now. One of my favorite resources is the 100 Days of Real Food blog by Lisa Leake. Lisa’s blog combines the necessary resources for a whole food lifestyle with the common sense and simplicity needed for real life. For me, it is a reliable, comfortable resource.  Since I’ve been following her blog from the beginning, I am so excited to be a cookbook ambassador and review the book I received!

She recently released her first cookbook, 100 Days of Real Food: How We Did It, What We Learned, and 100 Easy, Wholesome Recipes Your Family Will Love, and it is a perfect reflection of the blog. Not just recipes, but dedicated to making the recipes and lifestyle easy and natural for you and your family. No kids yet here – but if you are a parent you will love the tips! I have been in awe of what she is doing for her children for years.

This is not just how to cook healthful recipes, but how to make it happen and why.

My favorites so far are the Shortcut Eggplant Parmesan and the Chocolate Truffles made with dates. If you are not yet using fresh Medjool dates as a dessert option, start now! I could not live without them.

I love the chapters designed to make this easy – grocery lists that aren’t confining, favorite brands and dried spices and tips for substitution equivalents. And the chapters that provide the facts and awareness needed for a whole food lifestyle  – details about whole wheat and whole grains, processed ingredients versus homemade ingredients and why food dyes are horrible (a personal favorite), among other things!

Gluten-free, Vegetarian and dairy-free recipes are included, as well as freezer friendly options (is anyone NOT taking advantage of freezer cooking yet?!). And, all the photos are gorgeous!

With any cookbook or blog I use, my favorite tool is Pepperplate. It is a wonderful meal planning app that syncs wirelessly so I have my shopping lists and recipes available wherever I go! If you feel stuck when you go to the grocery store – give it a try!

Applegate Natural Deli Meats

Heather —  October 25, 2012

 sampling-article-product-image-300x225

I recently sampled Applegate natural deli meats through Moms Meet.

Ordinarily I really try to stick with purely organic meats, and I was familiar with Applegates organic line. I do feel that Applegate has an understanding of healthful practices I care about and I was interested in the lower price point, so I tried their Natural Roast Beef, Smoked Turkey and Roasted Turkey.

12574I was most impressed with the Roast Beef. I thought that was delicious. The meat had good flavor and texture and was sliced a bit thick compared to what I ask for at the deli (a more slivered cut), still for the roast beef I liked the thicker cut. One slice was perfect for a sandwich. The kids also loved the roast beef. It was moist, but not wet and had little fat.

With the Natural Honey and Maple Turkey, I liked the flavors very much, but I didn’t like the thickness of the slice. I really like turkey sliced very thin. The turkey texture seemed too moist for me and the one package had a vein running through it that ruined that package for me. I just pulled all that off and used the other half. Sometimes, that happens with deli meats, but I usually ask the slicer and if the meat is not nice, I’ll try a different one. I do think this was random, because another package I got was fine. Next time, I will check the packaging more thoroughly.

I also have purchased the pepperoni and I like that one very much. The flavor is good and the size is perfect to make a pizza or two.

The price point runs about $3.99 to 5.99 at my stores and I think these are a good buy for my family as I trust this brand more than others when it comes down to being free of nitrates, nitrites, and other artificial ingredients, and of course, without antibiotics.

My daughter and I love having lettuce wraps with Applegate Turkey slices, carrots and cheese, dipped in a bit of blue cheese dressing. I feel that a slice of deli meat is a great source of protein in the middle of the day for all of us.

In fact, one day, while running errands, we realized we had forgotten to eat. I was near our local coop store, so we ran in and grabbed a bag of Applegate roast beef and the kids and I ate that in the car. We felt much better and I was glad to have that healthy option for a quick bite.

Guess what? I get to offer a giveaway of Applegate product for two readers thanks to Applegate and Moms Meet!

To enter, visit www.applegate.com and then come back here and leave me a comment about something you learned on their site.

(The giveaway will end on October 31, 2012. Two commenters will be chosen via random.org, limited to U.S. residents only)

use paper carton
As mama, I am very concerned about caring for my family’s health. Because of this, we have been going green one step at a time. We began eating organic foods. We began using green cleaners. I started buying my children organic clothing. We began recycling more.

Today, I just realized another thing I can do that is green. Good for my family and good for the planet. And, it is super easy!

I can choose paper cartons over other types of packaging. Yes, it is that easy!

I read up on the benefits of using cartons on the Evergreen website www.choosecartons.com

Here are some facts I like:

  • Cartons block UV light preserving the nutritional value of foods like milk.
  • Cartons are made from renewable materials – more than 70 percent of the carton is made from paper, all from trees from responsibly managed forests.
  • Pulp and paperboard is manufactured into cartons using 50% or more biomass fuel, a renewable energy source.
  • Reducing food and packaging waste with a great product- to-package ratio, an average of 94% product to only 6% package. So more of what you buy is product.
  • Cartons are recyclable where facilities exist. The paper fiber contained in cartons is valuable. Recycled cartons are used to make products such as tissue, office paper, wall boards and other building materials.  To learn if your community accepts cartons for recycling, please visit www.recyclecartons.com

This really makes a lot of sense, using a renewable resource and I love knowing that my shopping habits can make a difference.

And then I went on a fridge hunt, looking through my refrigerator and pantry to see what cartons I already use and what changes I could make.

inside of refrigerator

What’s In YOUR Fridge?

As I use a lot of local and organic products, I was glad to see I already had some cartons, like the buttermilk and cream! Some brands I like were already looking out for me, I suppose.

milk

I noticed that my gallon of milk is always in plastic, rather than carton form. When I buy the half gallons, they come in paper cartons. I often have soymilk (although I was out) and that always comes in a paper carton.

I know I buy a lot of yogurt and kefir and that always seems to come in plastic packaging.

I do also seem to have most condiments in plastic or glass.

The frozen stuff all seems to be in paper packaging…

I would love to get more things in paper cartons. With my family of six, we go through groceries quickly and I like using cartons.

I believe most of the things in my fridge are recyclable. And, I looked up if paper carton recycling is available in my area, and the form said no, but actually, I always toss our paper cartons into our recycle bin and the recycling guys are picking mine up, so I will need to check on this.

So far, I have learned a lot lately about how to help my family AND my environment. I will be looking around the grocery store for more cartons when I shop tomorrow. Of course, at the farmer’s market, I use nothing, and that is good when possible:)

Bite Size Brunch

From a Mother’s Day celebration to a weekend brunch with friends to a springtime gathering, eggs are a tried and true favorite ingredient.

Did you know that sometimes even Moms can be wrong?

Seriously! Well, not My Mom of course, I am referring to me. When I first began our family quest to eat only whole, natural and organic foods, I did not realize that some of the tried and true brands I had used in the past would still work for us.

A perfect example includes Land O Lakes. Until I sat down and really looked at their website I was unaware of how many nutritious options they carry for eggs.

In fact, right around the corner at my local grocery store I am able to purchase Land O Lakes® All-Natural Organic Eggs. The price is reasonable and oh so convenient. And, I feel great about serving my family eggs, which are full of protein and no animal by-products, no antibiotics and no chemical additives. A few other options, such as Land O Lakes® All-Natural Eggs pictured, are available as well.

So, now I want to celebrate! How about a Mothers Day Celebration with an Egg Inspired Party?

(Yes, those burned eggs your kids make you for Mothers Day are priceless, but let’s talk about some delicious Brunch choices that you can serve at any time of day, really.)

A Spring Menu with the bite size nutritious treats below, simple, vibrant fresh flowers and some colorful drinks make a perfect Mothers Day Brunch.

I was recently visiting family and I tried out some of the inspiring recipes I found for adorable bite size egg dishes. Really, they were all so easy to make and lasted well, and the kids felt good…not all full of sugar!

Breakfast mini bites

Breakfast Biscuit Bakes smell sooo good!

I strongly believe that fresh, quality products will make delicious meals. I am glad to see Land O Lakes offering these eggs!

I tried the following recipes, with a few small adaptations (for example, I just used my own homemade biscuit dough). All are available on the Land O Lakes website:
