Dads Desk:

It was finally time to take my gaming experience to the next level with EA Sports NCAA Football 13.  Before I headed out to my local Walmart, I made sure it was available.  A quick check of Walmart.com on my iPad assured me a copy was waiting for me.  I grabbed my teenage daughter and headed out.

You can see our shopping trip on google plus. After picking up our copy, we headed home to hit the grid iron.

The most noticeable difference is the quality of the HD graphics.  Next is the addition of the  Dynasty mode.  As I mentioned before, you have the opportunity to add one of several former Heisman Trophy winners to your team and help them regain that prestigious title.  Take the time to go through all the menus and familiarize yourself with all that NCAA Football 13 has to offer.

As I mentioned in my last post, I faced a last second defeat at the hands of my seven year old daughter.  With EA Sport’s You’re Covered Program, in four simple steps I was able to add her face to the cover of our game. Just go to the link and follow the steps.

She got a kick out of hers:

and when we shared it on Facebook, she got plenty of Likes.  It was fun to personalize the cover for her and now her victory is a great family story with “proof”.

As I mentioned before, here is a quick rundown of the main differences between EA Sports  NCAA Football 12 and NCAAFootball 13.

  1. You can become one of 10 legendary Heisman Trophy winners (Robert Griffin III, Doug Flutie, or Herschel Walker–just to name a few).  I choose Herschel Walker in honor of my wife having attended UGA.  Use their strengths and talents on your favorite team to help them in their quest to regain the Heisman Trophy.
  2. The Passing game has been improved-both from a Quarterback and Wide Receiver standpoint.    As the QB you will have more control on the ball’s trajectory and on how you use play action and the option.  As a WR you will have a greater ability to read and react to the defense; so you can make that catch.
  3. Reaction time will depend on who you are.  Football players have differing abilities and now that is factored into the game.  The game slows down during key times increasing your on-field awareness and opening up more opportunities as you sense things before they happen.
  4. Impact your ability to recruit the talent your team needs with Dynamic Dynasty.  Your recruiting grade can change from week to week.  And your Game day Saturdays will come to life with live studio updates and commentary by Rece Davis.

So, the stage is set in our home for a rematch.  Will this one end differently?  Will I be able to overcome the football prowess of my second grader?  No matter the outcome, the HD graphics, new player features, and Dynamic Dynasty option—to name a few—guarantee a good time will be had on the Grid Iron.

Dad’s Desk:

During Family Game Night, it’s pretty common around our household to stir up and renew our video game rivalries.  After we have had our share of nachos, veggies with dip, and root beer floats, we turn our attention to the game at hand.  We especially enjoy EA Sport’s NCAA Football 12.

NCAA Footbal 12 for Xbox 360

Over the years we have moved around the country; so as we pick our teams, we often choose a team from where we have lived.  The stadium graphics are incredible and bring back fond memories of when we saw our teams compete in person.

Play Selection

We have six kids of all different ages.  Recently, during our Family Game Night, we have started having our youngest take part in learning to play.

Friendly RivalryIn our latest showdown, she threw a Hail Mary pass for a touchdown to win with no time left on the clock (sounds like the ending to a famous Boston College game from days gone by).  I was “schooled” by my 7 year old :).  After wallowing in my defeat, I was heartened by the fact that there will be another Family Game Night where I will have the opportunity to regain my former glory.

EA Sports in conjunction with Walmart is getting ready to launch the latest title in the franchise- NCAA Football 13.  It will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  The release date is set for July 10, 2012.  This latest version of an already extremely popular video game will take your gaming experience to the next level.

Game On!

There are several new features that EA Sports has added that will get you hooked.  Here’s a quick rundown:

  1. You can become one of 10 legendary Heisman Trophy winners (Robert Griffin III, Doug Flutie, or Herschel Walker–just to name a few).

Another great feature of this game is going to be their You’re Covered Program.  You will have the opportunity to add your picture (or anyone you know who loves college football as much as you) to the cover of the game.  This is video game cover personalization like you have never seen before.  In four steps you can customize your cover.

This all comes in time for the 2012 – 2013 NCAA College Football season, which is about to get under way.  In my next post, I am going to share with you my review of NCAA Football 13 and offer one lucky reader a chance to win their own copy of this newest release by EA Sports.  In the meantime, take a look at the You’re Covered Program and if you don’t win, get ready for a great deal on your copy of NCAA Football 13 at your local Walmart.

From Dad’s Desk:

I am the son of a dentist and brother of a hygienist.  Good Oral hygiene has been a part of my life from day one.  Before using the Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide, I was using an Oral-B toothbrush with soft bristles.  How would the switch from a manual to a power toothbrush go?  Each package contains a handle, a wireless SmartGuide, a charger, a base station, a floss-action brush head, and a handy travel case.

Package from Oral-B

After opening the box and examining the contents, it was time to take this toothbrush for a spin.  This toothbrush by Oral-B provides their most advanced cleaning technology for ultimate plaque removal.  The accompanying wireless SmartGuide provides real-time feedback for how you are brushing.  It shows which of the four custom brushing modes you chose (daily clean, whitening, sensitive, or massage and deep clean).  It also times how long you are brushing in each quadrant (upper/lower, right/left) of your mouth.

I brush my teeth at least 2 times a day, and each year I get two teeth cleanings/dental check-ups.  I have not had any issues with either my teeth or gums for decades.  One of the biggest challenges I face is how to keep that “just cleaned” feeling after leaving the dentist’s office.  It seems like that first snack or meal “coats” your teeth despite regular brushing and flossing.  Well, with my first use of this power toothbrush my teeth felt super clean–like I just left the dentist’s chair clean.  The 40,000 pulsations and 8,000 oscillations per minute helped to really attack the plaque.  With those numbers you have the potential to prevent or even reverse gingivitis (gum disease).  The design of the brush head causes each tooth to be surrounded for a tooth-by-tooth clean.  For the first two days I alternated between my manual brush and the Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000.  Consistently, the clean I felt after using the power toothbrush was better and lasted longer.

So, I have officially switched over.  And you can too.  For a limited time, Oral-B is even offering a $10 mail-in coupon on some of its models.  But this offer only lasts until June 16, 2012.

…….is to infiltrate your local movie theater and enjoy Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol.  This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds.

This is going to be a two phase campaign.  First, I need to get into the movie theater.  For that I will add Fandango to my team.  Second, I will have to settle into my seat for an exciting ride through the world of Ethan Hunt and his IMF team.

Phase One:   Access Fandango for movie tickets

*Head on over to  Fandango.com and enter your zip code and hit the arrow key.

*Find your local theater in the listings.   Choose the movie and showtime you want.  Hit the “Tickets” key.

*Complete checkout process and head to the theater.

The process of getting the tickets was painless and took less than 5 minutes.  It is very easy to access the information and the checkout process is similar to any online website.  There was a $2.50 convenience fee for the transaction.  Fandango does have kiosks at some local theaters that allow you to bypass the ticket counter.  In my case, the kiosk was broken, but a swipe of the card I used at the counter produced the tickets.  It was pretty much hassle-free.

Phase Two:  Settle into Seat for Mission Impossible:  Ghost Protocol

In this recent addition to the Mission Impossible franchise Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his newly assembled team are sent on a mission that quickly goes bad.  Their cover is broken mid-assignment.  In the process they are blamed for an incident at the Kremlin that sets the US and Russia on the path to pre-Cold War relations.  IMF is disavowed by the US government and the President activates the Ghost Protocol in an attempt to stabilize relations with Russia.

Ethan and his team work against the clock to find a nuclear strategist with plans to plunge the world into a post-nuclear war world.  As in all Mission Impossible movies, you will be treated to views of exotic locations that only a few will ever experience in real life and you get to see the latest spy gadgets and technologies in action.  Over the the course of two hours (which flew by quickly) the team chases down their target, works to expose his plot and attempts to stop his plans for launching a nuclear warhead at the United States.  Does this lone team of IMF agents succeed?  While I cannot answer that question for you, I can tell you this movie is worth the ride.  There are some surprising plot twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat.    This Mission Impossible is a success.

From Dad’s Desk:

One important investment that I am working to maximize is the life of my vehicles.  Like most Americans, I am not in a position to handle a costly repair.  And buying a new (or used) one is a big investment.  So, I am always looking for ways to keep them running strong.  Over the years I have tried fuel additives and even some oil additives in an attempt to extend their lives.  Often with inconclusive results.

Recently, I tried STP Multipurpose Motor Treatment.  The bottle states it is good for both gas and diesel engines.  The benefits include:

  • Clean Fuel Injectors
  • Clean Intake Valves
  • Stabilize Fuel & Oil
  • Lower Emissions
  • Protect Against Viscosity Buildup…to name just a few.

The process of adding the product is simple.  You can add the contents of one bottle to your gas tank (treats up to 21 gallons) or you can add 1.5 oz. for each quart of oil to your engine’s crankcase.  Using this product doesn’t involve tools, jacks, or any other extreme conditions to perform.  It’s so simple, any of my kids, including my 15 year old daughter, can help with this maintenance.  I added STP Multipurpose Motor Treatment to my jeep’s crankcase and then to my van’s fuel tank.

You can see our entire process in the google + album.

Teaching Teens Fiscal Responsibility

Heather —  September 25, 2011

From Dad’s Desk:

You want to teach your kids so many things. These days it is important to talk about money.

I talk to my kids all the time about expenses, how to budget and avoid things like overdrafts, and how to use and establish good credit.

I have never expected my child’s school to teach them money habits. I am not  pleased schools are teaching them about health habits. Frankly, I think both of these things can and should be a parent’s job.

We are in a culture where debt is out of control, and we have to protect our kids as best we can. Knowledge is power.

So we talk about it. When they got their first Summer job, I took them to the bank and they got accounts and debit cards. We discussed having overdraft protection. So far, the experience has been good for them. They have seen how quickly money can run through your fingers, yet there have been no financial mistakes. I think at their age, a debit card is appropriate.

To help parents talk to kids about spending, American Express, financial expert Jean Chatzky, and Mom Central founder Stacey DeBroff have launched a Practice Safe Spend campaign. Read some of their tips to help you talk to your kids before they head off.

“Protect yourself from a budget blowout, go on the record.

Jean says: There are college expenses you plan for – food on the meal plan, books – and then there’s everything else. Laundry, late night pizza and other extras add up fast. Decide how much your teen will have for these variables, tell them to track all spending, then check back in a month to see how it’s working out.

Stacy adds: And encourage young adults to show off the organizational skills they’ll pick up at college with additional record-keeping measures. Introduce them to systems for filing and keeping track of monthly bank account, debit, charge and credit card statements, plus leverage the free online account management tools card companies and banks provide.

Keep your teens close, and their spending closer.

Jean says: Under the CARD act, your teens can’t qualify for credit cards until age 21 or they have an income to back it up. But you can add them to a card of yours as an authorized user. Make sure the card company will establish a reasonable credit limit for their card and that they report the history of bill payment to the credit bureaus under your young adult’s name, as well as yours. As long as you pay on time, your teen can come out of college with a good credit history in the works.”

From Dad’s Desk:

Americans live in a “Winner Takes All” society.  Ricky Bobby’s statement, “If you aren’t first, you’re last”, resonates with many today.  As a parent, I have learned the shallowness of those sentiments.  I want more for myself and my children.  Game Time:  Tackling the Past, which is on NBC this Saturday at 8pm EST/ 7pm CST, takes this issue head on.

Jake Walker is a winner. He is a star football player who is on his way to a record-breaking career. But in the blink of an eye he is brought face to face with his past and all its issues.  While waiting to renegotiate his next big contract, Jake is called back to his hometown when his Dad has a heart attack. During his time there, all his ideals are challenged by his Mom, brother, Dad, and others.  What is a winner?  Is it all about me?  A big part of the process for Jake is helping his brother coach their old high school team while their Dad recovers.  The brothers band together to heal old wounds and teach the next generation a lesson they had forgotten:  It’s all about One–doing one thing for someone else.

This movie is one for the whole family and one that will really reach those with kids involved in sports.  The story emphasizes family and helping those around you for the benefit of all.  This is a much needed message in today’s world.  So, plan on catching this one with your family Saturday night on NBC at 8pm EST/ 7pm CST.

To see if you have the correct answer be sure to tune in this Saturday (August 6, 2011) to NBC at 8pm E.S.T./7pm C.S.T.  Here’s a preview:

It’s rare to find a television movie that is safe for all eyes and still entertaining. P&G’s upcoming offering Who is Simon Miller? fits the bill. In the blink of an eye, an ordinary family is faced with the disappearance of their father and the reality that he is not who they know him to be. The family begins a journey of discovery that will help them determine who is Simon Miller.

The best way to describe this movie would be a cross between True Lies and the Spy Kids series of movies. They managed to tone down the violence (very minimal and not graphic) and yet maintain a strong sense of suspense and action. This movie models the virtues of loyalty and trust and exposes some of the real life issues all families face (not just those with a spy for a parent).

So take time to schedule your family movie night now! This would even be a good flick to watch with other friends who have kids. When you are done watching this movie, you will be able to answer the question Who is Simon Miller?
