Summary & Rating: 4. I really liked this assortment of American Government and Civics lesson plans, titled An Adventure In Liberty. The CD loads easily and has several sections of lessons, grouped by age levels. The lessons themselves cover a ton of material and many of the lessons have great built in activities such as crafts, charts, and games.

One really good thing about it? The CD is free to educators. America’s Heritage: An Adventure in Liberty K-12 lesson unit resource is a $150.00 value offered free for educational purposes! Get your 2009 edition.

The CD is available from The American Heritage Foundation, Inc., So, who are they? Check out their website, here. Here is a bit about their mission:

“The American Heritage Education Foundation, Inc. (AHEF) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the understanding and teaching of our nation’s factual and philosophical heritage to promote freedom, unity, progress, and responsibility among our students and citizens. AHEF has provided these materials to help students become thoughtful, active, and productive citizens.”

Overall, I think this is worth the time to order. Because I am not totally familiar with the creators of the CD, I do recommend looking through the lessons, making sure you agree with the content of each lesson. (Yeah, I didn’t read every one, especially the high school ones!)

I do like the elementary and middle school lessons. I loved “The Independence Game” and found it helpful to have the full text of many American documents and songs (like the Declaration of Independence and lyrics to Star Spangled Banner).

The CD even includes a Spanish version for elementary. The CD contains over 553 pages of information and lessons. Also, in the back, you can find legal information on freedom of speech in our country…very interesting to actually read.

Anyway, I will be jumping into using this with the lessons on The History of Thanksgiving….and I know my 14 year old son will enjoy a review of all the American Patriotic Symbols such as the Great Seal, The Seal of The President of the United States, the Bald Eagle, and The American Flag.

So, go here to request yours. They do also have a hardcopy option for $19.50.
