For Book Lovers–Get Your Summer Reading Fix

This popped into my mind this morning. Hope someone can make use of this!

For all my book loving friends–here are a few ways to get yourself some inexpensive or free books to read poolside this summer:

Here Burns My Candle by Liz Curtis Higgs

This is the first time I have read one of Liz Curtis Higgs historical romances. What a treat it was! I fell in love with the Kerr family as I traveled through Scottish history and the Scriptures.

Higgs obviously did quite a bit of research for the framework for this retelling of the Old Testament story of Ruth and Naomi. The novel, set in 18^th Century Scotland, followed the Kerr family (pronounced care, with a roll to the “r”), Prince Charlie and the Jacobites as well as the social life of Scotland. I was fascinated by descriptions of Edinburgh, the dress and behavior…even the meals of the time period.

I felt that I was transported back through time—and isn’t that what a delightful book can do? The character development was wonderful. I am a “skimmer” but in this book, I had to pay attention to all the characters. I found myself staying up late and wishing for a particular ending. The novel really delves into history and forgiveness and loyalty. Loved it!

Want to do something incredible for yourself and your love this Valentines Day?

Forget about the strawberries and chocolate. forget about the flowers. Get this book. No, don’t just get this book–read this book.

I really am tough when it comes to talking about love and marriage. I have made some bad choices and some difficult choices. I have been a single mom and a stepmom. I do not cry at weddings or during chick movies…that’s just not me. That being said, I have to admit, this book made me cry!

The writing in this book has a grace and sweetness that I thoroughly enjoy. The first chapter opens with a beautiful vision of marriage…what it is meant to be, what it can be. Subsequent chapters offer lessons on how to protect your marriage…how to respect the vow of marriage.

I have read several books lately that were just cumbersome, and I found myself plodding through them. Not this one. Love and War is a joy. I highly recommend this book.

Angels by Dr. David Jeremiah

What a fascinating book! I found this book to be worthy of some serious study. Going through the book, I was underlining and highlighting like crazy. The author travels through the scriptures exploring the role of Angels throughout history and in our world today.

Jeremiah’s main assertion is that Angels are at work in our world and that the Angels are certainly not chubby, weak little cherubs! Much more often, as we look at scripture, we see a vision of Angels as powerful warriors enacting the will of God.

Dr. Jeremiah discusses facts—such as the fact that the Bible contains over 300 direct references to Angels. He also uses scripture to attempt to explore and answer questions such as, “What does Jesus say about Angels?” and “What is the relationship between the Holy Spirit and Angels?”

The author also refers to the studies of other theologians and recounts some wonderful unexplainable stories regarding Angels. This is a book I will read several times.
