My Access Home Edition, from Vantage Learning

Summary and Rating: 4. So far, we are enjoying using My Access as a supplemental writing program for my ninth grader. This is an internet subscription based program, with a computer system using artificial intelligence to recommend lessons, set writing goals and prompts, and grade my child’s writing in a similar way to what ALEKS does for us in math. While there are some kinks, my son has done more writing than he would without it…so, that’s a winner for me. My Access has several editions and add-on packs. Today, I am reviewing the Home Edition.

Some things I like about My Access:

  • My Access can be used by students from 8-18 (as well as parents)
  • It can automatically create writing lessons–it has 90 already loaded writing topics for three different age groups (8-10, 11-14, and 15-18)
  • Or, parents can add in their own writing lessons
  • You get immediate essay scoring and individualized feedback
  • My Access creates revision plans based on strengths and weaknesses
  • Kids improve writing skills in a fun way with motivating activities, and parents can specify awards for points.
  • You can share your writing portfolio with others (like grandparents!)

Personally, it is easy for me to use this system as my son is older. I think it is a great idea to be able to add motivations! My son enjoys the independence he has working with the program and I get a bit of a grading break. That being said, we have to keep in mind that writing is subjective, and sometimes I do not agree with the computer.

I like that my son does not seem to consider this work:)

I like it that My Access sends me a weekly “report” on Nick’s progress. That is a great reminder for me to keep up. Also, My Access sends out a newsletter with language arts ideas and recommendations, and updates on their system and products. Frankly, I think My Access is in the early stages of growth and has great potential.

My Access Home Edition is available as a one year subscription for up to three students for $99.95, or up to six students for $129.95.
